The Thermal Pad Cooling Mod for your MacBook Neo 2026
Many iPhone, iPad, or MacBook Neo/Air users know the problem: Under load the device heats up, and without a fan the performance is throttled (thermal throttling). An additional thermal pad directs the heat from the chip directly to the aluminum housing: a proven trick from the modding scene. Why not also with the MacBook Neo?
Inspiration and preparation for the mod
The mod is based on a YouTube video that shows how easily the MacBook Neo can be opened. The author tested two thicknesses: 1 mm and 1.5 mm. Important: Use high-quality, electrically non-conductive pads with good thermal conductivity. The installation takes only a few minutes and requires only a Pentalobe P5 screwdriver.
Selecting the right thermal pad thickness
The thickness determines the contact with the bottom housing. At 1 mm there is often a small air gap – the cooling effect is lower. At 1.5 mm perfect contact is created, the heat is drawn away much better. The underside of the housing becomes noticeably warmer during operation, logical, but thereby the heat is drained from the SoC and the MacBook stays faster for longer.
