NIO ES9: A glimpse into the future – Live from the E-Sports Arena in Hangzhou

There are moments when you feel that you are not just at a product presentation, but witnessing the heartbeat of an entire movement. That is exactly how it felt when I recently flew to China. NIO had invited us to experience their new flagship SUV, the NIO ES9, up close.

The venue? The futuristic E-Sports Arena in Hangzhou. A more fitting location could hardly have been chosen, because what NIO showcased there was on an absolute Champions League level, both technologically and emotionally.

More than just a car: The NIO ecosystem in the ES9

Before we get to the hard facts of the ES9, I have to talk about the atmosphere. The branding and experience were simply first-class. It is fascinating to see how deeply NIO Life is rooted in people's everyday lives. There were NIO snacks and NIO water bottles everywhere, and what impressed me the most were the countless users proudly wearing their NIO Life clothing. I myself, of course, was also rocking my NIO Life shoes.

You can feel it very clearly here in China: NIO is a powerhouse. The community is incredibly warm, strong, and loyal. The success of the new ES8 has already shown where the journey is heading, but the ES9 now truly takes the crown.

The new flagship: The NIO ES9 in detail

The ES9 is positioned as a technology and executive flagship. It is very large and confident, but it avoids the ostentatiousness seen in other Chinese models. It comes across as very sophisticated.

1. Dimensions & Presence

The NIO ES9 is a statement. With a length of over 5.20 meters, it is designed to become China's largest pure electric SUV by volume.

  • Length/Width/Height: 5,234 mm / 2,012 mm / 2,010 mm

  • Wheelbase: 3,200 mm

  • Turning Radius: An impressive 5.4 m (thanks to rear-wheel steering of up to 8.4°)

2. Design: Shark Nose meets Diamond Effect

The front is dominated by the striking Shark Nose. What really stuck with me were the headlights: the daytime running lights have over 6,800 facets for a genuine diamond-fire effect. Furthermore, when getting in, you are greeted by a "light curtain" and a digital light carpet. For me, pure luxury class.

3. Performance & Charging (900V Power)

Under the hood (or rather, in the chassis) are engineering figures that would make many a sports car pale in comparison:

  • Acceleration (0–100 km/h): 3.4 seconds.

  • Drivetrain: Dual-motor all-wheel drive (180 kW front / 340 kW rear).

  • Architecture: 900V system (charging peak up to 600 kW!).

  • Consumption: Despite its size, the test value is only 10.1 kWh/100 km.

4. The Interior: "Sky Island"

The interior feels less like a car and more like a first-class lounge.

  • Display: A gigantic 48-inch 5K display stretches across the front.

  • Seats: The "Flying Aviation" seats offer a 22-point deep massage and even a foot massage with heat.

  • Sound: The "Nine Heavens" system with 47 speakers delivers a sound that cannot be described, but must be heard.

5. Intelligence: The First 5nm Chip

NIO uses the world's first 5nm automotive AI chip (NX9031) here. In combination with the new "SkyOS TianShu" operating system and NOMI 4.0, the car is not only smart but also capable of learning. It masters point-to-point city navigation, including autonomous battery swapping.

My conclusion

The NIO ES9 is not just the next model. For me, it is a statement. It combines high-end technology and good software with a sense of community that I have not experienced with any other manufacturer worldwide. Anyone who thinks e-mobility is emotionless has never been to a NIO event in China.

NIO is here to stay and to redefine the luxury segment. I am excited to see when I will get to sit in an ES9 for a relaxing drive. Currently, I am traveling around China in a NIO ET9 for a week. A first-class driving and passenger experience!

Unfortunately, the NIO ES9 is not coming to Europe. European NIO users will have to be a little patient with the NT2 models, which are also great cars in their own right. Even if they are no longer brand new.
