NIO dashcam recordings: How to convert videos to MP4.

The built-in dashcam in NIO vehicles is a valuable tool for recording journeys, documenting accidents or special experiences on the road. However, a common stumbling block for many NIO owners is the file format in which the recordings are saved. This format is often not compatible with many common video players or platforms, which can limit the use and sharing of the videos.

Fortunately, there is a simple solution to convert these videos into the widely used and compatible MP4 format. In this post, we provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to quickly and easily convert your NIO dashcam recordings using the free program Handbrake.

How does conversion work with Handbrake?

Installation of Handbrake
Before you begin converting, please install Handbrake on your PC or Mac. Handbrake is a free open-source software available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Visit the official Handbrake website to download and install the latest version.

Preparing the Files
In your vehicle, you can plug in a USB stick in the center console. Please use the Type-A connection for this. Then, you can open the dashcam via the dashcam icon. Copy the relevant recordings to the USB stick. Once you are at your PC and Handbrake is installed, copy the dashcam videos from your USB stick to your computer.

Importing Video Files in Handbrake
Open Handbrake and select "Open Source". Navigate to the location on your computer where you saved the videos and select the corresponding files or folders. The dashcam recordings from NIO are in TS format.

Adjusting Conversion Settings
Handbrake offers a variety of settings to ensure that your videos are converted in good quality. In the "Output Settings", select MP4 format as the container. In the "Summary", choose MP4 as the container format and select Web optimized. For the resolution (under Video), you can raise the resolution limit to 1440p so that the main camera is not downscaled. For the video encoder (under Video), it is best to choose H.265 (ideal is VideoToolbox or Hardware Encoder). This results in a compact file size with a common codec. If you have playback issues, you can also use H.264.

Start Conversion
After you have made all the necessary settings, you can add the file or all videos from the folder to the queue. Check your output directory. You can continue by clicking Start.
